The bikini wax treatment season is here. Brushing up on some key steps can save you time and ensure an informed and satisfied client who returns again and again. Things such as clarity on the type of intimate waxing, correct wax selection and key post hair removal advise are the three stepping stones of a succesful bikini wax appointment.

Agreeing on the right wax terminology

One can find an impressive amount of different terms or nicknames for bikini waxing types. And it creates a confusion when a client comes with a name you have never heard before. It is time to get an overview of the most popular types, their different names and the techniques they stand for.

Classic/Basic (15 min)

The classic type is a solution for a client looking for a natural-looking bikini zone with a defined shape. The technique focuses on removing hair outside of the underwear panty line and the crease of the leg on both sides. It is also sometimes referred to as the ‘bikini line touch up’.

California (20 min)

California is also known as 'the American' or 'full/extended bikini wax’ resembles the classic but has a larger waxed bikini zone, leaving the triangle smaller and neat looking. It is perfect for easing your client into a more thorough waxing routine.

Brazilian (30 min)

Brazilian waxing is known as the most popular hair removal style. The majority of the hair is waxed in the front and sides leaving only a little hair area with the entire under and backside waxed. Depending on the client’s preference, there are many popular designs of the remaining hair strip. The common ones are the following.

Landing strip (also known as the French wax or G-string or thong wax)

Pro tip! Avoid providing the client with too many design options. This will prolong the session and might require very precise detailing skills to create complicated designs.

Hollywood (30 min)

The waxing type involves removing hair around the complete bikini area including the under and back area. Some salons also call it ‘full Brazilian bikini wax’, and this is where confusion can arise when the style is being requested. Clients looking for a completely smooth feel would be happy to spend more time on the waxing bed.

Having a printed overview of all of the waxing techniques available to your client can help you guide them through their options. You can download a full chart of the styles by clicking on the following link.

Why is it important to have a chart with all of the bikini wax styles?

  • Not all customers are familiar with the styles in advance or have their own terms of bikini waxing styles.
  • Providing them with a visualization of the techniques avoids miscommunication and the uncomfortable for the customer talk about intimate areas of the body.
  • It gives you a clear idea of how much time the session will take, making it possible to book your daily appointments efficiently and be able to take more customers in the long run.

Chosing the right wax

Now that the type of bikini wax is chosen, let's move on to wax options. It is no secret the bikini area is one of the most gentle spots on a body and requires a product designed for hair removal of sensitive areas.

Intimate Hot Wax

The intimate no strip wax is a hot wax with creamy texture formulated for highly sensitive places on the skin. It contains CicaseptiCALM Complex that gives it its anibacterial, anti-irritation properties. One of its convenient benefits is how fast it sets on the skin while maintaining its flexibility.

Cristalline Hot Wax

If you prefer working with a more fluid structure, the Cristalline Hot Wax is perfect for the purpose.  It is a multipurposeful product which is very suitable for sensitive skin areas such as the bikini line. It is also hypoallergenic (with no rosin or perfume added) and vegan, which can meet the needs of a client with a skin prone to allergic reactions.

Both no strip waxes have an extremely flexible texture making it very workable and elastic throughout the entire application process. The waxes allow for a thin layer of application on the skin that lets you use half the product and lower the cost per treatment. You choice of the right products can be therefore based on the type of skin your client or the texture you are more comfortable working with.

Post waxing guidance is key

Is it worth spending few minutes explaining homecare after the appointment? Absolutely yes. Giving guidance is important, as it informs the client about possible pitfalls that could potentially lower the quality of their next waxing, especially if it is the person's first treatment. Some post waxing care advice worth reminding the client about is this:

  • Prevent the skin from irritation by avoiding heat, tight underwear, and saunas the first 24-48 hours after treatment.
  • Shaving and tweezing are highly unadvisable in between appointments. This will cause damaged skin and inconsistent hair growth.
  • Products such as deodorants, body sprays, self-tan, perfume, and scented lotions irritate the skin especially in the first two days after the appointment.
  • Specialized intimate skincare between treatments is vital. You can recommend the client to take home the After Wax Refreshing Gel as a moisturizer and the Ingrown Hair Care Serum to prevent uneven bumps and spots.
